Fiqh of Marriage

21 Feb 09 13:30 by: Shaykh Yusuf Ahmed Az Zhahaby and Shaykh Dr.Mansoor Ali Al Azhari

The Arabic word fiqh means understanding, knowledge and comprehension. In the context of Islamic legislation it refers to the legal rulings (jurisprudence) of the Muslim scholars, based on their knowledge of the shari`ah which primarily originates from the Quran & Sunnah (tradition of the Prophet saw). It is unanimously agreed amongst the scholars that obtaining the fiqh of a subject that one has embarked upon or is about to embark upon is an obligation for that individual.

Marriage is an important institution within Islam. It is something that is encouraged as the Prophet (saw) said, “Oh young men, whoever amongst you has the ability, let him marry.”  If a marriage is enacted and lived in the correct manner it becomes a form of worship and a means of gaining reward in both worlds. However, before embarking upon marriage (and for those who have already entered into this bond) it is essential that they learn the fiqh of marriage in order to ensure that the contract of the marriage, terms, conditions, customs, rights, responsibilities and the general married life are all in accordance to the teachings of Islam. Negligence of the divine instructions and guidance related to marriage may cause severe problems in both this world and the Hereafter.

The Islamic College of England (ICE) has developed a unique one day interactive course covering all the essential aspects of marriage ranging from what to look for in a potential spouse all the way to the rights/responsibilities of the married couple. The course will be taught by a qualified scholar who has a strong understanding of both the Arabic and English language. Visual aids will be used in order to assist the learning process. The course is intended to be an interactive session where the Shaykh will teach the rulings and deal with any questions or clarifications required by the students in regular intervals.

  • An insight into the institution of marriage, qualities to look for in a spouse and the ruling pertaining to the need to get married
  • The Marriage Contract inclusive of issues related to witnesses, what should be said for the contract to be valid, prohibited persons for marriage, wali etc – What is required for a marriage to take place?
  • Mehar (Dowry)
  • Right/responsibilities of husband/wife
  • And much, much, more

Therefore do not miss this unique FREE opportunity to study the essentials of marriage in a modern context with an interactive Q&A
