Maqāṣid al-Sharīʼa is the Islamic discipline that is concerned with the higher intents and objectives of the Sharia (Islamic law). The Sharia's overarching objective is to derive benefit and repel harm, both in this life and the life of the hereafter. As a result, Muslim scholars have noted that the individual legal rulings are based upon this truism, and that there exist no rulings that are merely arbitrary. However, the wisdom behind such rulings may not be always discernible, but nevertheless exist.
This one day course will explore the salient points of the discipline of Maqāṣid al-Sharīʼa, as well as expound on the foundational principles that underpin our understanding of the divine command.
In an age that is fraught with much misunderstanding, the course hopes to equip learners with a general understanding of the discipline as well as a deeper appreciation for the message of the Prophet Muhammad (saw).
